Spontaneous speech imitation and cue primacy
نویسنده
چکیده
This study investigates the influence of cue primacy on spontaneous speech imitation by speakers of Seoul Korean. In Seoul Korean, at least two distinct acoustic cues, stop VOT and f0 of the post-stop vowel, differentiate aspirated stops from other phonation types. Previous studies have shown that English speakers imitate extended VOTs of voiceless stops both in immediate shadowing [12] and delayed imitation [11]. In this study, Seoul Korean speakers heard Korean aspirated /t/ with either extended VOT or raised post-stop f0. The realization of these properties in their own /t/, /t/, and /t*/ productions were compared before, during, and after exposure. After hearing /t/s with extended VOT, participants produced these stops with higher post-stop f0 as well as longer VOT. After hearing /t/s with raised post-stop f0, however, the same participants did not lengthen VOT but raised poststop f0. This asymmetry is explained in terms of cue primacy in Seoul Korean.

Relational Timing or Absolute Duration? Cue Weighting in the Perception of Japanese Singleton-Geminate Stops
Relational timing has been proposed as a solution to the problem of variability across durational properties of speech arising with changes in speaking rate. The current study investigates the role of absolute and relational timing cues in perception of Japanese stop length (singleton/ geminate) categorization. Absolute (stop duration) and relational (ratio of stop duration to preceding mora du...
متن کاملSegmentation Cues in Conversational Speech: Robust Semantics and Fragile Phonotactics
Multiple cues influence listeners' segmentation of connected speech into words, but most previous studies have used stimuli elicited in careful readings rather than natural conversation. Discerning word boundaries in conversational speech may differ from the laboratory setting. In particular, a speaker's articulatory effort - hyperarticulation vs. hypoarticulation (H&H) - may vary according to ...
متن کاملSpontaneous and explicit speech imitation
The single word speech shadowing task typically produces spontaneous imitation of the speech of the shadowed talker (the model). This task has been used as a tool for examining speech convergence in a non-social setting and has provided data for claims that the mental lexicon is constituted from instance-based exemplars. We examined whether the speech of participants who shadowed or explicitly ...
متن کاملCan mergers-in-progress be unmerged in speech accommodation?
This study examines spontaneous phonetic accommodation of a dialect with distinct categories by speakers who are in the process of merging those categories. We focus on the merger of the NEAR and SQUARE lexical sets in New Zealand English, presenting New Zealand participants with an unmerged speaker of Australian English. Mergers-in-progress are a uniquely interesting sound change as they showc...
متن کاملDoes the brain know who is at the origin of what in an imitative interaction?
Brain correlates of the sense of agency have recently received increased attention. However, the explorations remain largely restricted to the study of brains in isolation. The prototypical paradigm used so far consists of manipulating visual perception of own action while asking the subject to draw a distinction between self- versus externally caused action. However, the recent definition of a...
